Home Network
From Poggs' Wiki
I have never been one to buy cheap kit. My home network is built of some moderately beefy kit:
- Cisco 877 router
- Cisco Aironet 1231 Access Point
- HP JetDirect box
- Buffalo WHR-G54S with OpenWRT
A network diagram is in the pipeline.
Cisco 877 router
Having used Cisco equipment in the workplace for many years, it is only logical that I should extend this to my home network. The 877 is a great router if you're experienced with Cisco, less so if you're just starting out.
Buffalo WHR-G54S and OpenWRT
I've found these APs to be fantastic bits of kit when running OpenWRT. They can be reflashed without much difficulty, act as a bridge, router, run software, or be hacked to include a serial port.
My APs run a custom-compiled version of OpenWRT which strips out some of the functionality that the boxes don't support, such as USB and a web server. I use them to extend my LAN to other rooms where I don't have, or want to, run cabling. For example, I have my VoIP server and printer in another room to reduce noise.
